But here's the part nobody puts in the marketing: the scan is only as good as the database entry it points to. The barcode is accurate. The number behind it? That's where the honesty starts to wobble.

The scan gets the product right

Let's give the technology its due. A barcode scan is a lookup, not a guess. The UPC or EAN code is a fixed string of digits tied to a specific product. 3. "Calories" on labels already carry legal tolerance

Regulations permit a certain margin of error on nutrition labels, often around 20% for calories in practice. So even a perfectly-entered database record inherits the label's built-in fudge factor.

What this means for people who actually count

If you're tracking to lose weight, this is genuinely good news — and it might save you from being neurotic. The goal of logging is not forensic accuracy to the calorie.
